Russian parents group asks Putin to cancel Elton John concert

A Russian parents’ committee has asked President Vladimir Putin to cancel a planned concert by gay musician Elton John, saying he intended to violate a ban on “homosexual propaganda”.In an open letter to Putin, the local parents’ group in central Ural region was reported by media as saying: “The singer intends to come out in support of local sodomites and break the current Russian law, directed at protecting children.”

Saudi group campaigns against ban on women driving

A group of Saudi activists has begun another campaign for the lifting of a ban on women driving, urging women to get behind the wheel on October 26 in defiance, according to its website.

The “October 26 Driving” campaign says it has gathered 8,700 signatures for a petition it published on September 21.

United Nations reports ‘dramatic’ progress in fight against AIDS

The global rate of HIV infection and the number of AIDS-related deaths have been dramatically reduced, thanks to expanding access to treatment, the United Nations said in a report issued on Monday.In its annual update on HIV, which it said now infects around 35.3 million people worldwide, UNAIDS said deaths from AIDS and HIV infection rates were falling, while the number of people getting treatment is going up.

France Bans Under-16 Girls from Competing in Pageants; Could Modeling Be Next?

In a move to end the “hypersexualization” of young girls, The Guardian reports that France has banned girls under 16 from competing in pageants.The proposal, which was introduced as part of a gender equality movement by former sports and youth affairs minister Chantal Jouanno, passed in the French Sénat today and will now be returned to the Assemblée Nationale for approval.
